Our Savior

Man has many ideas and theories about heaven. Religion after religion tries to market some new twist on how to get to heaven. So which one is correct? Are any correct? How can we know what truth is? Jesus said in the Bible: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” John 14:6

We need to look at one source that has been proven over time and comes from the maker of the universe – the Bible, the very Word of God.

God says there is one thing we all must first understand:

  1. You are a sinner before a holy God

Doesn’t sound very complimentary, does it? According to God’s Word, though, we know that in and of ourselves, we cannot possibly be righteous enough to get to heaven.

For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God – Romans 3:23

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no not one. – Romans 3:10-12

It’s pretty clear that even if we think we have kept the law pretty well, when it comes to God’s law, we fall short.

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. – James 2:10

  1. There is a penalty for your sin

According to God’s Word, we all have a sin problem from the day we were born.

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned – Romans 5:12

Also, that sin has a price tag attached to it. Wages = something we get for something we do.

For the wages of sin is death; – Romans 6:23 (the first half… you’ll see the second part in just a bit)

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. – Revelation 20:14-15

According to God’s Word, our sin causes us to spend eternity in a lake of fire. If this is all that God’s Word said, there would be no hope.

  1. You cannot earn salvation

What if I could earn my way out? What if my good works outweighed my bad?

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. – Ephesians 2:8-9

Not even someone who could list a multitude of righteous works can earn his/her way out

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; – Titus 3:5

Again, because you are a sinner, and God is holy, there is no hope on your own.

  1. Christ paid your penalty

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. – Romans 5:6-8

God commended, or showed/proved, his love for you by dying for you and making a way to heaven for you before you get righteous. He died for you while you are still a sinner. He paid the price that you honestly have no way to pay. He then rose again three days later, proving He was God and has the power to forgive sins.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. – Romans 6:23

  1. You must accept by faith God’s way of salvation

It’s called the gift of God: you can’t earn it or pay for it. You have to accept it by faith. Faith is believing. You must believe that what Christ did is enough. That He is the only way to have your sin problem taken care of. Then and only then can you miss hell and be with God forever in heaven.

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. – John 3:36

And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. – 1 John 5:11-13

It sounds too simple? Christ did the hardest part. Now you must do your part and put your trust in Christ alone. Changing your mind about whatever it was you believed about God, about sin, or about how to go to heaven, you must now accept what God says in His Word and trust only Christ for salvation.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. – Romans 10:13
